Established in 1937, the Higashiyama Zoo is one of Asia's largest attractions, featuring a zoo, botanical garden and an amusement park. For animal lovers like me, its the perfect place to spend the day, with about 500 species of mammals and reptiles which include rare animals like the koala bear, kangaroo, and medaka (Japanese killifish). The top attraction of this zoo is the handsome gorilla “Shabani.” Many young female visitors from all over the world come to see this 19-year-old western lowland gorilla known for his photogenicity and attractive facial features. There are many kinds of cherry blossom trees, and when they are in full bloom (mid-April), the place looks heavenly, and people gather to celebrate and enjoy the pleasant weather. Another attraction is the Higashiyama Sky Tower. It has an observation deck and a restaurant 100 meters above the ground and is a landmark of the area.
★Access: Take the Higashiyama line from Nagoya, get of at Higashiyama Koen (H17), and take exit 2.
