For those who enjoy hiking or just heading out into mountainous areas, Horaijisan, located north of Shinshiro, is the place to be in autumn. Designated as a scenic natural monument by the national government, Horaijisan is part of a chain of former volcanic mountains. Rising 695 meters above sea level, the mountain is a steep and challenging climb. Along the way up the 1,425 stone steps to Horaiji Temple (which takes 40-60 minutes), you can stop occasionally, catch your breath and enjoy the view. Hiking courses (which take about two hours) are also available from the summit of Horaijisan for avid hikers.
