Ukai: Cormorant Fishing on the Nagara River

SHORYUDO
The ancient method of fishing with a cormorant bird (ukai) is played out at night, with the fisherman accompanied only by the glow of the embers of a red bonfire reflecting on the surface of the clear waters of the Nagara River. Tourists can enjoy dining while riding on boats, watching the fishermen skillfully control the cormorants and use their rope to catch sweetfish (ayu).
