Golden leaf shop in Kanazawa

By PUREV, Enkhee. Posted on December 25, 2014

Kanazawa is Japan's main gold producer, producing 99% of domestic golden leaf. Gold leaf is made by mixing silver and copper with gold, achieving a thickness of around 0.0001 meters. This technique requires specially processed paper, which helps for the fine thickness. The best golden leaf is so thin that you can see other side of leaf when you hold it up to the light. This product is known as “Kanazawa haku”.

Gold leaf is used for various applications such as ornaments, vessels, temple decorations, shrines, and Buddhist instruments.

During my stay in Kanazawa, I visited one of the gold leaf shops. Here, the staff of the shop invited us to drink tea with gold leaf flecks in it. They told me that foods such as sake, cakes, and tea with gold leaf in it can improve the digestion system. In addition, you can enjoy watching craftsmen make the gold leaf. The process of making gold leaf requires special techniques. The Kanazawa region’s humid climate with rain and snow is suitable for producing gold leaf.

I enjoyed cosmetics as well as smartphone cases and other Japanese souvenirs that were made using gold leaf.

I also enjoyed ikebana and Japanese restrooms decorated with gold leaf.
