    Rime ice is a phenomenon where fog freezes white on trees, and you can see this marvel in Chino City, Nagano! Pilatus Tateshina Snow Resort is an all-inclusive ski resort located in Chino City, Nagano, where you can go long-distance skiing and snowboarding on its 4km-long slopes. The 900m-long rime ice course gives you a great opportunity to enjoy the magnificent scenery of the mountains and the beautiful rime ice up close. For those who are not good at skiing, try a gondola ride from an altitude of 2,237 meters and enjoy the winter nature of the Kita-Yatsugatake Mountains!

    Newly opened in December 2020, enjoy the spectacular view at this new terrace.

    SKY TERRACE, a new observation deck at the top of Mt. Kurumayama, opened in December 2020. At 1,925 meters above sea level, Mt. Kurumayama offers a panoramic view of Mt. Fuji, the Northern, the Central, and the Southern Japanese Alps, and Mt. Yatsugatake. A barrier-free area is available so that everyone can enjoy the scenery. In the summer it acts as an observation deck and in the winter it becomes a ski resort, so you can enjoy SKY Terrace all year round. The terrace is a three-minute walk from the lift station at the top of the mountain.

    KITA-YATSUGATAKE ROPEWAY

    Breathtaking view from the top of the mountain. Take a 7-minute winter walk in the air.

    If you're looking for the great outdoors, try the Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway in Chino City, Nagano. The ropeway climbs to an altitude of 2,237 meters in just seven minutes, crossing between Mt. Kita-Yokodake and Mt. Shimakare. You can enjoy the panoramic view of mountains from the ropeway! The ropeway is open all year round and conveniently runs every 10 to 20 minutes. In winter, it is crowded with skiers, but even non-skiers can enjoy the view of the snow-covered mountains from above. The mountaintop cafe, Mountain Cafe 2237, is located at an elevation of 2,237 meters above sea level. There is also a store and cafe area. They sell popular souvenirs made from Kokemomo, which grows wild in the area.

  • Tateshina Onsen

    TATESHINA ONSEN

    A historical onsen (hot spring) that warlords bathed.

    Tateshina Onsen is said to be the secret hot spring used by the famous warlord Shingen Takeda. Tateshina Onsen is the collective name for the Taki-no-Yugawa Onsen and other hot springs located at the foot of Mt. Tateshina and is known for its abundant spring water and therapeutic effects. There are four spring sources: Tateshina-Mimuro Gensen, Shingen-no Kakushiyu, Takinoyu Onsen Motoyu, and Serizawa Onsen. Each spring has a different quality, and the water temperature ranges from 30 to 67 degrees Celsius. The water is good for treating gastrointestinal disorders, rheumatism, and moisturizing the skin. There are a variety of hot spring facilities, and open-air baths, combined with the natural scenery of the surrounding area. In winter, the snowy landscape further enhances the healing effects.

Chino City is located in the middle of Nagano Prefecture, and takes about two hours to reach by train from Tokyo. It is at the foot of the western side of Mt. Yatsugatake and is part of the Suwa Basin surrounded by high mountains. It's a place for locals living in the mountains, a gateway to Mt. Yatsugatake as well as a resort area with highland plateaus such as Tateshina, Lake Shirakaba, and Kurumayama. The area is full of Japanese scenery with a new face around every corner.
