The cirque was carved by a glacier about 20,000 years ago at an altitude of 2,612 meters

If you want to see a spectacular view of nature, you absolutely can't miss the Senjojiki Cirque! Located at an elevation of 2,612 meters, Senjyojiki Cirque is an amphitheater-like valley formed by glacial erosion about 20,000 years ago, directly below Mount Hōken in the Central Alps. It was named Senjojiki (thousand tatami mats) because it is as large as an area covered with about 1,000 tatami mats. The scenery changes its appearance beautifully through the seasons, but the silvery-white view in winter is the most popular. Wearing snowshoes at the top of the mountain and playing in the snow while enjoying the spectacular landscape is a popular activity.

Nagano is famous for soba (buckwheat noodles), but Komagane sauce katsudon (pork cutlet rice bowl) is another must-try food! It is a bowl of rice topped with shredded cabbage and a pork cutlet coated with plenty of sauce. It's a typical local dish that has been popular since the Showa period (1926-1989.) The Komagane Sauce Katsudon Association, est. 1993, set rules for making sauce katsudon to help local makers create a more consistent dish. For example, the dish requires pork loin weighing 120g or more, the sauce must be association approved, and only cabbage, no other vegetables. Each restaurant adds original elements to this recipe, creating unique styles of katsudon. If you like pork, this is a must-try!
